USDT in Telegram

USDT-jetton available to Telegram users through the in-app @wallet bot. Send, receive, swap, and pay without leaving the messenger — the first mass-market stablecoin integration into a crypto-agnostic messaging platform.

USDT in Telegram is a feature of the built-in Wallet in Telegram that lets users hold and send USDT (Tether) without leaving the messenger. Announced in April 2023, available in most countries with regional limitations.

How it works

Wallet inside Telegram (the @wallet bot) is a custodial wallet operated by The Open Platform (the former Wallet team from TON Foundation). USDT there is USDT-jetton on TON — the canonical Tether stablecoin issued natively on the TON blockchain since 2024.

The user:

  1. Opens @wallet in Telegram.
  2. Buys USDT with a card, P2P, or receives it from another wallet.
  3. Sends USDT to any contact via @username — fees inside Wallet are usually zero.
  4. Can withdraw to any TON wallet (Tonkeeper, MyTonWallet) — that step is an on-chain jetton transaction.

Why it matters

USDT in Telegram made stablecoins as smooth a chat feature as stickers. The user does not need to understand blockchains, jettons, or gas — they just send “dollars” to a contact. It is a mass onboarding channel into TON that millions pass through every year.

Custodial vs non-custodial

Wallet runs in two modes:

  • Custodial (TON Space off). The service holds the key. Simple, but losing the Telegram account loses the money unless Cloud Password is set. KYC kicks in above limits.
  • TON Space (non-custodial). The user sees the seed phrase, only they hold the key. Safer, but requires responsible seed storage.

In both modes USDT is the same jetton on TON. The only difference is who holds the private key.

Regional limits

In some jurisdictions USDT in Telegram is unavailable or restricted. After MiCA took effect in the EU, USDT availability for European users shrank — Tether has not obtained a full EMT authorisation, and some providers dropped the product in the EU. In Russia Wallet operates with KYC and balance limits.

Ecosystem effect

USDT in Telegram created a “first contact with TON” funnel: users with no crypto background send USDT to friends, then buy TON in the same wallet, then discover mini apps and DEXes. That is structurally different from other networks where onboarding starts at exchanges and requires deeper engagement.
