Toncoin (TON)

Native token of the TON blockchain. Used to pay gas, stake validators, and govern protocol parameters. Symbol: TON. 9 decimals (1 TON = 10^9 nano).

Aliases: ton, ton coin, the open network coin

Toncoin (ticker TON) is the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network. It plays the same role ETH plays on Ethereum or SOL plays on Solana: it pays for transactions, secures the network through staking, and acts as the unit of account for governance.

The basics

  • Symbol: TON
  • Decimals: 9 (the smallest unit is nanoTON = 10⁻⁹ TON)
  • Total supply: approximately 5.1 billion TON in 2026, growing slowly via validator emissions
  • Genesis: initial distribution from the GIVER pre-mine in 2020, after Telegram’s TON development was wound down and the open community took over

What it is used for

  1. Gas. Every transaction on TON pays its compute, forward, and storage fees in TON. Typical cost — fractions of a cent.
  2. Staking. Validators must lock around 300,000 TON; nominators delegate smaller amounts to pools. Staking yield in 2026 is roughly 3–5% APR.
  3. Governance. Protocol parameters (gas price, validator rewards, slashing rules) live in the masterchain config. Validator votes — weighted by stake — adjust them.
  4. Payment. Increasingly used inside Telegram for Stars conversion, Mini App purchases, NFT marketplaces, and direct peer-to-peer transfers.

Inflation

TON issuance comes from validator block rewards. Annual emission has settled near 0.6% of supply in 2026 — significantly below the early years and well below the issuance of typical PoS chains.

How to read amounts

A balance in raw form is given in nanoTON: 1,000,000,000 nano = 1 TON. Wallets and explorers usually show TON with up to 9 decimals; if you see 999000000 next to a balance, that’s 0.999 TON, not 999.

Where you buy it

  • Centralised exchanges with TON pairs: Bybit, OKX, Bitget, MEXC, KuCoin, Gate.io. Direct TON/USDT and TON/BTC pairs are deepest there.
  • In-app, via Telegram Stars or Wallet Pay. Wallet (@wallet) handles purchases inside Telegram with cards or P2P; the user receives TON to their in-chat wallet.
  • DEX (after entering the ecosystem). STON.fi and DeDust offer TON pairs, but you need TON or a stablecoin on TON to trade — you don’t onboard new users via DEX.

Storage

Any TON-compatible wallet handles Toncoin natively: Tonkeeper, MyTonWallet, Tonhub, Wallet, Bitget Wallet, OKX Wallet. Hardware support exists via Ledger (TON app, mediated through Tonkeeper or MyTonWallet).

TON vs jettons

Toncoin is the only “true native” asset on TON. Everything else — USDT (TON), NOT, DOGS, HMSTR, hTON, tsTON — is a jetton, i.e. a token issued via the TEP-74 standard. Gas is always paid in Toncoin, even when transferring jettons.

Market context

By 2026 TON is among the top-15 cryptocurrencies by market cap. Daily volume sits in the hundreds of millions of dollars; the chain’s USDT issuance has crossed the $1B mark, putting it among the larger non-EVM stablecoin venues.
