TON Foundation
Non-profit organization based in Switzerland that coordinates development of The Open Network after Telegram exited the project. Runs grants, ecosystem fund and developer programs.
Aliases: ton foundation, foundation
TON Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in Switzerland (canton of Zug) that coordinates development of The Open Network. It is not a Telegram subsidiary and is legally independent from the messenger, although the two entities cooperate closely on product integrations.
Background
The original Telegram Open Network project was halted in 2020 after the SEC complaint and Gram token freeze. Telegram formally walked away from the project but left the source code open. A group of community developers and validators picked up the network and continued building it under the name The Open Network (TON). TON Foundation was set up to coordinate that effort and to manage shared resources.
What it does
- Developer grants. The Foundation runs programs that fund teams building infrastructure: wallets, DEXes, indexers, smart contract tooling. Allocation happens through open calls and the ecosystem fund.
- Infrastructure support. Funding for public RPC nodes, explorers (in early stages), documentation, SDKs and contract languages (FunC, Tact, Tolk).
- Ecosystem relations. Coordination with exchanges, custodians, legal counsels and regulators across jurisdictions.
- Product partnerships with Telegram. Through formal agreements and a shared technical base — Wallet integration, USDT in chats, Telegram Stars program and similar initiatives. Telegram does not own the Foundation and does not control its treasury.
- Marketing and evangelism. Hackathons (such as TON Hack), industry conference presence, content programs.
Structure and treasury
The Foundation holds part of the Toncoin supply earmarked for ecosystem development. Exact treasury numbers vary across reports depending on what is counted — only liquid holdings or everything including lockups and staked balances. Some of the funds are staked with validators, some are distributed through grant tracks.
Governance is run by a board and an operating team. Structure is more centralized than DAO-style Ethereum projects, but reporting on major programs is published on the Foundation’s channels.
Common confusions
- TON Foundation vs Telegram. These are separate legal entities. Telegram is the messenger company. TON Foundation is a Swiss non-profit. They are legally independent.
- TON Foundation vs TON Society. Society is a community-led initiative inside the ecosystem focused on events, regional chapters and educational programs. The Foundation is the formal treasury and grant engine.
- TON Foundation vs network validators. The Foundation does not run validators and does not centralize consensus. Anyone with enough stake can run a node.
Why this matters for users
If you see official announcements about protocol upgrades, new grants, TEP standard changes or exchange partnerships — they usually originate from TON Foundation. Marketing activity branded as “TON” inside Telegram (sponsored channels, ad placements) can come from either Telegram itself or the Foundation. The publishing source is usually the giveaway.
