Telegram Username

Telegram Username is the unique handle that addresses a user or channel in Telegram (@username). Originally first-come-first-served and free, since 2022 Telegram has run Fragment — an open TON-denominated auction for usernames.

Why pay for a username

In Telegram a username is part of brand identity. @durov is worth more than @misha_2024_xyz because:

• It is a deep link: t.me/durov opens directly to the chat.
• Short, obvious, readable names are valuable for businesses (@bank, @news, @apple are premium).
• A username cannot be squatted — once registered it is locked to its owner.

The Fragment auction

With Fragment in place:

• Telegram periodically auctions a pool of usernames (some recovered from inactive users, some reserved by Telegram).
• The auction is an open TON bid, typically running 7 days.
• The winner pays TON and receives the username. The name becomes an NFT on TON — it can be resold, gifted, or withdrawn to any TON wallet.
• Top names sell for hundreds of thousands of TON. @wallet, @bank, @gpt, @chat traded for millions of US dollars.

Username and privacy

Telegram also allows registration with an anonymous number — also through Fragment, also as an NFT. This lets a user run Telegram without binding their real mobile number. Anonymous numbers themselves trade on Fragment.

Under the hood

Each Fragment username is:

• A record in Telegram tying the username to a specific account.
• An NFT on TON in the EQCA14o… collection (the username master contract).
• A smart-contract item whose ownership equals ownership of the name in Telegram.

When the NFT is sold (via Fragment or a direct transfer), Telegram automatically re-binds the username to the new owner.

Role in the TON ecosystem

The username auction was the marquee proof-of-concept for TON in 2022-2024: hundreds of millions of dollars in volume, a real product with real demand, deeply integrated with Telegram. It remains one of the largest non-financial NFT use cases in crypto by cumulative volume.
